How Mold Remediation Works

  1. 01

    Inspect

We find the mold and, more importantly, the moisture feeding it.

  2. 02

    Contain

Plastic barriers and negative air pressure keep spores from spreading to clean rooms.

  3. 03

    Filter the Air

HEPA air scrubbers capture spores during the work.

  4. 04

    Remove

Moldy porous materials like drywall, carpet and insulation are cut out and bagged.

  5. 05

    Clean

Hard surfaces are HEPA-vacuumed and cleaned. Mold has to be removed, not just killed.

  6. 06

    Verify

We check that no visible mold, odor or moisture remains. Independent clearance testing is available.

How Big Is the Problem

SizeAreaTypical Approach
SmallUnder 10 sq ft (about 3 × 3 ft)Often a homeowner cleanup with gloves, goggles and an N-95 mask
Medium10 to 100 sq ftLimited containment and respirators
LargeOver 100 sq ftFull containment, negative air and full protective gear

Based on EPA mold remediation guidance. Heavy growth, mold inside walls or in the HVAC system can need more than the size alone suggests.

Good to Know About Mold

  • Mold Grows Fast

It can start on wet drywall, carpet and wood within 24 to 48 hours.

  • Dead Mold Still Matters

Killed mold can still cause allergic reactions, so it has to be physically removed.

  • Go Easy on Bleach

The EPA doesn’t recommend routine use of bleach. Never mix bleach with ammonia.

  • Don’t Paint Over It

Paint on top of mold peels, and the mold keeps growing underneath.

  • Leave the HVAC Off

If you think the system is contaminated, running it can spread spores through the house.

  • Fix the Moisture

Without fixing the leak or humidity behind it, mold comes back.

Mold Remediation Questions

Do I need a mold test?

Not always. If you can see mold, the EPA says testing is usually unnecessary. Testing helps when you smell mold but can’t find it, or to confirm the area is clear after work.

Is mold covered by insurance?

Often only when it comes from a covered water loss, like a burst pipe. Many policies also cap mold coverage. Check your policy.

Can I stay home during the work?

Usually yes, outside the contained area. People with asthma, weak immune systems, infants and older adults should stay away from moldy areas.

Will the mold come back?

Not if the moisture is fixed. Mold needs water, so the leak or humidity problem has to be solved too.

Do you just spray it?

No. Spraying alone leaves mold in place. Affected materials are removed and surfaces are cleaned under containment.

How long does mold remediation take?

Small jobs can take a day or two. Larger jobs with drying and rebuilding take longer. We give you a plan after the inspection.
